A big point of pride: all of WALTER’s content is created by North Carolina writers, photographers and illustrators, and specifically folks who live in Raleigh and the Triangle. Internship opportunities at WALTER Magazine.

WALTER magazine uses interns to support our small but mighty team. We offer internships throughout the school year and during the summer. Our internships are for school credit only and can be geared toward editorial, design, advertising, or events/multimedia experiences. Our internships are a great stepping stone for anyone with an interest in writing, communications and/or journalism.

We give our interns opportunities to own projects and play a true role in producing WALTER content. Our goals are to train students in magazine-style writing and editing, to teach about the ever-changing magazine revenue model, and to sharpen skills in content marketing and branding. Our ideal interns are sharp thinkers, enthusiastic consumers of local culture, and always willing to pitch in on any tasks.

WALTER MAGAZINE – FALL 2024 EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP

What you would do: Interns will aid the editorial department in generating ideas, researching stories, reporting, writing, fact-checking, copy-editing, updating the website and managing social media. Intern duties will include updating the archives and contact database, tracking the editorial calendar and assisting with production and shipping. Our interns create web content and are a major part of the print production process.

Hours: 10 to 15 hours a week (in-person or hybrid), from September through December.

Requirements: Knowledge and love for Raleigh and the surrounding area. Attention to detail, time management, and ability to work independently. Solid writing ability is a must; comfort with AP Style is preferred. Our ideal intern is comfortable in the Adobe suite, WordPress or similar CMS, and communicating with proper phone and email etiquette. This is a fast-moving, dynamic work environment best-suited to students interested in journalism or communications.

WALTER MAGAZINE – FALL 2024 GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP

What you would do: The design intern works with creative director, editors and sales team to produce editorial layouts, source and prepare photography and illustrations, create ads and design digital graphics to support the publication. 

Hours: 10 to 15 hours a week (in-person or hybrid), from September through December.

Requirements: Attention to detail, time management, and ability to meet deadlines. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) is a must. Experience posting on social media like Instagram and Facebook would be helpful. WordPress experience would be positive. Candidates should have a good understanding of luxury brands, strong design, communication skills, and the ability to multi-task with attention to detail, and should be able to work with set production schedules and deadlines.
